I've had a look but can't find an answer to this.

I need to rebuild a SBS2003 server because of a major change of drive hardware (ie adding RAID card and new drives etc).

Is there a way of re-attaching the XP and W2K clients to the domain but keeping the same users profiles? In the past I've found that a new profile would be created with a 001 extension.

Many thanks in advance, and I'm sorry if its a basic question!

The best way is to use 3rd party sw like Quest DMW. But, if you cant buy something, you could probably get away with using some of these free tools:

cacls
xcacls
cmd-line loop
vb script

The cacls/xcacls will resetup your fillesystem ACL's. The cmd-line loop can copy your profiles to the new profile. The vb script will push your machines into the new domain. You may also be able to use part of the ADMT from Microsoft as well.

It is a bit of a pain but here is how to do it.

Log in as local admin.
Create a new local user account.
Log Out.
Log in as new account to create the basic profile.
Log Out.
Log in as Domain Admin.
Right Click My Computer. Click Properties. Click Advanced.
Click Settings under User profiles.
Highlight the profile you want to save.
Click Copy To and navigate to the folder for the new local user.
Click Change and assign rights to the new local user.

You now have a local profile that can be migrated when you re-run
Special Note: If the user profile you wish to save belongs to a user that is local admin on the box you need to first remove them from the local admin group to be able to do this.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks guys, I'll look into the suggestions.

Just as an aside note: you are probably aware that SBS is heavily dependent on Wizards and circumventing them only leads to problems down the road. It is for this reason especially that I recommend you avoid 3rd party applications and allow for SBS to do things the way it wants to. Otherwise you may wind up with problems with software deployment and the use of RWW. (remote web workplace).

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
