I have a Gateway Performance 1500 with 128megs of RDRAM. The ram sticks in the machine are (64 times 2)800 non-ecc at 45ns. I'm looking to upgrade the machine to 640 (256 times 2). I know you have to match the RDRAM and etc. The question I have is can you add 2 sticks of 256 with a (((40ns)))and will it work with the existing (45ns)? I have ask several folks and have got all kinds of answers regarding the 40ns and 45ns. Some say know problem, others say you might, some say it wont work. Appreciate the info!

Scroll about half-way down at the following website:

In that chart, it will show you that 45ns and 40ns modules can coexist on certain motherboards depending on their chipset. The i850E, for example, does not support the slower 45ns modules. The i850/i860 on the other hand do support both. However, you must still make sure that the 40ns modules are paired together (same goes for the 45ns modules).

Although it should be OK, I recommend against it. Why? Well, what's the point? Buying the faster 40ns modules isn't going to do you any good. All 4 modules will have to run at the same latency, so they'll be set to the lowest common denominator for speed. In this case, that's 45ns.
