RDP Encryption Error

Anyone seen this error when connecting to a 2003 server over RDP?

Because of an error in data encryption, this session will end. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.

I can connect, login, do things and intermitantly i get this message, i can just click ok, then reconnect fine, then it happens again. Terminal services is not installed, the "Allow user to remotely connect to this computer" is checked. I am connecting over the internet to this server, it sits behind a linksys.

I think this started after installing the only 4 patches available on windows update for 2003 server. Anyone else seeing this?

I think this problem has something to do with the Linksys router. I started having the problem after switching to the Linksys. I am still looking for a solution before switching back to my old router. Any information will be helpful.

Funny you say that, i upgraded the firmware on the linksys not too long before i built this machine. I wonder!

Thanks for pointing that out as well, because I forgot to mention that I did in fact upgrade the firmware on mine before I started having the problem. I have a buddy that is using the Linksys wireless router with the 4-port switch in it and he is not having any problems with RDP. However, I don't know what his firmware is at. I am using just the 1-port router with the latest firmware. It seems like the Linksys routers do not like to pass the type of encryption on the protocol (which I can't think of right now.)

I'm running firmware version 1.45.6, Jun 24 2003. Are you doing MAC address cloning on the wan port? I'm not and am wondering if that'll make a difference.

I get this same error, and my server is behind a cisco pix 501. I'm not sure what to do since this same firewall was in place before we upgraded the server to 2003 from 2000.

Were you getting this in 2k? or just when you switched to 2003?

No. It just started last week actually. Or rather, that's when my clients first started complaining. I lowered the encryption level on the server this morning. Not sure if that will do anything though.

Changing the encryption level on TS did not fix the problem for me, so I guess it could still be my firewall.

Micronmega,

I am running the same version of firmware as you are but I am not cloning my mac address on the wan port. I may try goni back to an older version of the firmware to see if that will fix the issue.

I have found out that my buddy has the Linksys BEFW11S4. His firmware is at 1.44.2.1 and it works fine with RDP.

OK I went back one version on the firmware at 1.44.2z on my BEFSR11 and problem is solved.

Thanks

Where did you get the firmware from? Linksys won't help me get one revision back, and the setup CD i have is like 3 years old.

I downloaded it from Linksys. They had the last 2 revisions for my router. You may not have the model that I have. What is your model number?

BEFSR41 4port, all they have listed for revisions is the current one i have, and one for routers with zone alarm. I guess i can try that one tonight!

Excellent

I found this article of great help. I too upgraded my firmware and started having problems. Once I switched it back ... no problem!

I probably would have figured it out in time .. but I hate pulling out my hair.
