Hi there,

Is there a difference between RDimms and regular ddrs?
I am upgrading memory to an ibm server xseries 235, it has regular DDR memory slots, and the website points me to PC2100 standard ibm ddr memories P/N 33L5040, but the sales representative is offering me these PC3200 RDIMM memory kit P/N 73P2866 also from IBM.

Does anyone has experience with IBM Servers?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Rick

Under normal circumstances faster ram of the same family type can usually be fitted, this ram just runs underclocked.
But I'm not sure in this instance because of the "R" prefix in the description! kinda looks like Rimms?
If the sales person was saying PC3200 instead of the PC2100 I would have said this was probably fine.
Make him double check and ask him why it says "R"

You might want to check out what the computer can use.If it could use the 3200 but only at 2100 speeds why pay more? (if you are paying more)

Are you sure it says RDIMM? Rambus memory uses the term RIMM and the old PC800 (800MHz) modules were also referred to as RIMM 3200. If Rambus hadn't fallen off the map, we'd all be really confused with this naming terminology PC, RD, RIMM, DIMM, DDR, etc...

Make sure this is NOT what you are getting if your motherboard supports DDR. PC3200 DDR and RIMM 3200 are two very different items.

Hi everybody,

Thank you for your valuable answers.

This is the link to the pc2100 regular DDR, the website suggest you as an option:

This is the link to the pc3200 RDIMM, the IBM salesman was offering me :

The term used is RDIMM Kit and this are PC2-3200 (2x1GB) ECC DDR2 , so they are DDR2...
The information is mostly vague, i would say generic, it says this memory is supported by the Xseries servers, and serveral other models, but it doesn´t say especific the Xseries 235 which is my server

In the list of memory supported by Xseries 235, appears the 73P2868 which is a 512k model.
And also... the pin count doesn´t match.

The 3200 are cheaper and faster than the 2100,

thanks,

Ricardo
