Hi:

My connection to web: Direct DSL 256, No Firewall.

Client Machine: XP Pro (RDC)

Server: Windows 2000 Server (Terminal Services Admin Mode)

VPN: from Client to Server working great. I can ping, see shares ect.

Problem:
After establishing VPN to server, everything works except Remote Desktop. It tries to connect and shows a black screen, the logon screen doesnt show, it keeps black screen for about 15 to 20 sec then closes.

Ive tryed other methods though, and they all work like VNC, PCAnywhere, Ect. All except RDC.

Remote Desktop works perfectly if i disconnect the VPN and RDC directly to its ip or domain name.

Had the same problem....

Bet you it has to do with your MTU setting; if the MTU size is incorrect on either end of the connection, you get the "black screen"
The MTU size setting can vary for clients connecting
e.g. office has MTU set at 1446 (original 1500, cable), client 1442 (original at 1492, on DSL). Adjust your firewall also, when you get one.

utility for adjustment....

manual adjustment...

Thanks a lot for answering and helping me.

I tried adjusting the MTU using the software from speedguide, the problem keeps happening.

The black screen appears only when connecting to the server from within the vpn. When i connect without the VPN directly to the server ip, it works great.

The Server is located on a OC3 connection, no firewall.

Any more ideas?

The problem is with the VPN.

Thanks a lot!!@

Had the exact problem as you have, some router along the path was fragmenting the VPN packets.

When you get the black screen, from the Terminal Server connection manager, is it showing any activity just as you get the black screen ? Do you have a VPN log and monitor of the VPN connections ? I have a Sonicwall firewall and all the VPN activities would show.

It was suggested on another site if a device on the server end existed, with port 3389 and 500 open for TS access, perhaps these ports being open are interfering with the connection through the VPN. Router maybe

On Mark Minasi's site they have a forum on Terminal services, the last URL is the site, one of the responders, Christa, writes books on TS

Sorry my fix did not help
