Seen a lot of threads on this but have figured out the cause of my problem, just not sure how to resolve it!

A single Windows 2000 server is able to browse the network fine..... until someone dials into it's local RAS server. The remote machine has no problems when remoting. After this happens though browsing on the server becomes REALLY slow. I can fix it if i restart my RAS service - browsing returns to being instant after this.

The RAS server is simpy a single modem providing access to the network.

Any ideas?

Ben

does this happen whatever the type of client that dials in?
XP / 2000 ?

is there anything recorded in the event logs on your server?

if its not broken, fix it anyway - with luck you might break it and have an excuse

The only clients connecting are XP. I'm pretty sure it's client independant though.

There are no errors in event viewer whatsoever!

for network browsing to go down like that, something to do with the master browser maybe?
does anything else slow down on the server?
like you said, you restart the RRAS service and all is well.

strange...

I've been using browstat.exe to try and diagnose this, but the master browser is reported as the same before and after someone connects.

It sounds like it should be something to do with that though yes.

the server that has the browsing problem, is it the RAS server? or is it a server that develops this problem once someone connects to the RAS server?

The Server that experiences slow browsing after being RAS'd to is indeed the RAS server itself.

in your shoes i'd search for kb articles on microsoft's site... sound like a bug of some kind.....
i'll keep looking too, if you find anything, post us ;)

couple of fill-in questions...
Are you in a domain?
Do you have WINS working? and do you need it?
How many Network cards does this server have (minimum 2- LAN & modem...) ?

Does it have any other function (DNS, DHCP, DC, IIS, SQL etc..)
How many other servers do you have on your LAN?

Server is in a 2000 domain yes.
WINS is up and running (if only for a couple of 98 clients)
On board 100mbps NIC is disbaled, 3COM Gigabit NIC is installed.
Other than RAS the server is a file server ONLY.
There's 4 other servers on the network.

Just noticed that my VPN server is experiencing the same problems. Not such an issue with this one though as it isn't serving anything!

OMG I seem to have fixed it! I found KB article 292822 which doesn't seem to describe my problem, however one resolution is to add a Registry key called DisableNetbiosovertcpip within the tree of remote access.

It definately fixes the browsing problem but I'm testing whether remote clients are still working ok....

nice one... !
