If the pagefile of a Windows 2000 Server can't expand because of limited hard drive space, will this cause the system to instantly crash?
We have a Windows 2000 file server that periodically crashes for no apparent reason. There is nothing unusual in the event logs before it crashes. I think the reason might be that the pagefile couldn't expand because of limited hard drive space. It was set to have an initial size of 192 MB and a max size of 512 MB (don't ask me why it was set up this way when there is 384 MB of RAM in it!). The pagefile was on the system partition which is only 1.46 GB. When the system boots and the pagefile is at 192 MB, there is about 90 MB of free space on the drive. It doesn't seem like this should have caused the system to crash, maybe freeze up, but not instantly crash. I moved the pagefile to a different drive and gave it an initial size of 1 GB and a max size of 4GB. It hasn't crashed again yet but I want to make sure that this will fix the problem before it crashes again.
It has a 700 mhz Pentium III, 384 Megs RAM. Apparently it has been doing this for about a year ( I just started working here a few weeks ago).
