Is this a virus problem, if so any clue on getting rid of it?

I have an XP home OS that is connected to a cable modem. It is suppose to be assigned an IP address by the provider, but now when I hook it up it is assigning its own random IP Address.

I've tried removing the network adapter several time, but no luck.

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance.
Brian

I don't quite understand what you mean - do you mean that you have a fixed IP from the service provider? If you don't then you will probably get a different IP address everytime the modem logs on - it's called dynamic IP and is how most ISP's work. Can you access anything through the modem? If you can - then it's certainly dynamic. If you need to reach your home pc remotely, or if it hosts some kind of site, then checkout

Sorry for not being clear. The computer is assigning an IP address and it's not picking up the one assigned by the provider. It is a different IP address scheme all together.

I can see the IP address, but it's not one assigned by the ISP.

So I presume that you are not getting a connection to the net. Check the properties of your network card TCP/IP settings and make sure that it is set to obtain an IP address automatically. If that doesn't work and you know what the IP address should be, change that setting to use the IP address from the ISP - (you might need to add the DNS server addresses as well)

Yes no connection at all. I even assigned static IP address to it and it did not even register it.

What IP address is it assigning?
Maybe....... Disconnect the computer from the modem - reboot the modem - reconnect the computer to it - see what you've got! (Never tried this before - it's a guess!!)

Is the IP 169.254.x.x? If so, this means you are set to use DHCP (automaticly assigned address), but your computer cannot commumnicate with the server (your ISP). Check to make sure there are no custom settings in network connections that your ISP has not specified to be there.
If no luck there, have you checked the cable? MCSE, A+
