Good evening, I hope someone can help me!

I have been editing a project for a client for some months on and off and have had no problems until a few days ago (typical as the completed edit is due tomorrow afternoon). I keep getting graphical blips flashing up on the screen at random, it looks kind of like little white and green blocks flashing up and when I scroll backwards through the film and replay, the blip doesn't play in the same place again.

I am using a fast PC with the footage stored on a Lacie external hard drive. I decided to delete the preview files for the project this afternoon, defragment the drive and then render the whole project again, I'm hoping this will help somehow but am desperate to make sure that when I record my film out to my camera and to VHS tomorrow these flashes don't come with it. If anyone can help I'd be really grateful.

One possibility - but far from the only one, I suspect - is that the cable from your external drive is picking up interference. I've seen similar problems when internal EIDE cables are mis-routed too close to other components. If this is a possibility for you, try routing the cable well away from sources of strong magnetic/electrical interference (eg monitors).

If that's not it, then if it were my problem, I would move everything onto an internal drive and see if that made a difference - assuming there is enough spare space available, of course.
