Raid help

A friend of mine has the possibillity of buying a second hand board and Celeron processor(866). It`s abit raid board from what I can find out. Can anyone tell me what raid is?,what hardware is required to run it?, can I run it normally? Or perhaps someone can give me a link to further enlighten me. Thanks guys If your unsure....Dont do it!
