Hi,
I am thinking about buying a ML350 server, but I had a question about the Smart Array 641 RAID controller. I know it only has one channel and I know that it will support raid 1 and raid 5, but can it do both at the same time?

I would like to put six drives in and have two of them raid 1 and the other 4 raid 5. Will the 641 controller do that, or do I need to go with something better?

I did look through the documentation and the online information, but it never said it could do two seprate raids at the same time.

Thanks,
Mark Pearce

Any Compaq RAID controller can support multiple arrays (of different types) on the same controller. a RAID1 and a RAID5 is no problem.
Obviously it won't be quite as fast as a dual channel controller but it's a heck of a lot cheaper. :)

I would suggest however that you spring for the Battery Backed Write Cache enabler module which will increase the cache to 128Mb. Helps speed performance and while it seems expensive is reasonable value for money as Compaq options go.

Neill,
Thank you for your response. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I will look into the cache enabler module.

Thanks again,
Mark Pearce
