using win98, "windows update" has always worked. now it doesn't ! have microsoft stopped the service or have i got a bug??

Hmmm....can you give a little more info? By does not work, do you mean you can't access the update site? The site doesn't "read" your machine"? You're not getting any prompts? etc,etc...thanks.

I have also been getting 'Windows Update Error' for the last while.

Potentially, two (2) considerations come to mind:

Active support for Win98 was slated to begin phase out starting around June 2003.

Since the MSBlaster Worm, they seem to have temporarily disabled many of their support pages (XP, in particular) as a move to protect against bandwidth attacks from that vulnerability.

Update works fine for me, just did a 98 machine yesterday. The traffic issue may be a valid factor, though.

added info!"update" page loads ok.when i click "scan for updates" , a short burst of activity occurs, then nothing happens. i repaired IR 6 to no avail,re-downloaded service pack.,,,, just the same. cannot locate "knowledge-base reference
free win98 support stopped in June i believe

Right...but you should still be able to pull down any and all updates. I've tested the site since I last posted and it works A-ok for me. I'm installing the August 2003 Cumulative Patch (822925) as we speak. One proposed fix I've seen is to go to your C:\Program Files\Windows Update folder and delete everything but "wuhistv3.log" then try the site again.

On some computers here, I have no problem (win98). On at least two (I've only done 4 so far), when I click 'scan for updates' it immediately jumps to 100% with an error number (ends in A138 I believe?) and in thd windows update.log there is a different number (00C0002?) or something to that effect. The windows update support pages mentions both of these but their 'fixes' do nothing to fix the problem. Both machines updated just fine in late July, so I assume it's their problem. who knows?
just adding my info to the ticket...
(I'll try deleting those files and try again)

yep, deleting the contents of the c:\program files\windows update did the trick!
the two computers having the problem had only a 'V4' folder in there just for reference.

hi, my update folder contained "v4" folder only.
deleted v4, no effect. deleted whole update folder.
when restarted, win98 replaced the folder complete so no effect
should i have more in the update folder?
can i download Windows Update as a seperate item ?

Ok, couple of ideas.

Have you done a browser update or reinstall since your last "good" attempt at using update?

Also, in regedit, surf to this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Do you have an entry for NoWindowsUpdate? If you do, I'll bet its value is set to "01 00 00 00." To rectify, change it to: "00 00 00 00."

At HP's site
They had this to say;

NOTE: We believe the worm is designed to increase the Web traffic to the Microsoft Windows Update Web site. Some indications are that on August 16, 2003, the worm's impact on the Windows Update site will increase dramatically. If an increase in Web traffic does occur, this Web site may take a long time to display, or may not display at all when you try to access it. Please be patient and try to connect to the Microsoft Windows Update site at another time.

-= + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + =-

So if your having problems with Windows Update, even if you don't have the virus on your pc, this could be why.

just my .02 cents

the entry " NO WINDOWS UPDATE" does not exist at suggested place. should it be there? if so , how do i add it ?

Not the way I understand it. Rather, if it WERE there, the setting could have been changed.
Look here, in regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Active Setup \ Installed Components \ {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

The value for "Version" should read: 5,00,2014,0216
Set it to this is it is not so... (PLEASE make a note of what the setting WAS, in case you need to reset it.)

Had a look at my neighbour's XP machine (plus one other XP machine) and got the same Windows Update Error as on my WIN98 machine.

There appears to be enough people having such problems that there clearly is a systemic problem here.

The only common denominator that might be of concern and under suspicion may be 'SPYBOT' - spyware detector and remover. THeir (preventative) immunize function and imbedded SPYWAREBLASTER have impacts on many ActiveX controls. Possibly some of the security patches and this application have come to some point of incompatibility problems.

tgus,
All valid points, except the fact that the virus/worm doesn't affect Win98 PC's.

Also, the only thing Mi¢ro$oft changed was the domain in which you would normally access the Windows Update site. They did not take it down. BLEW2 can get there just fine. If you re-read his posts, it's just when he hits "Scan for Updates" that he has a problem.

I had a problem earlier where I couldn't open anything in a new window, and while this was happening, Windows Update would not work because when it scans your system a new window opens up. I searched the web for a fix and found the answer here.

thread608-132319 305 replies to the original post and a thread that lasts for over a year, I would make sure that the "open in new window" choice on the context menu works before you persue this possibility.

re carrs post "value" was 4,72,3609,2400
tried suggested value:- no obvious effect. returned to original on safety grounds

can i download a new version of "update" seperately?
thanks very much for all the advice everyone
ps i am running SPYBOT and have done for some time

cdogg,

I didn't say that the virus effected w98 PC's. I was simply pointing out the fact that because the virus was effecting so many PC's (not w98) that somehow the virus was programmed to effect the windoz update site. So the web server is too busy to be responsive sometimes. The proof of that is, some people can get it to work the first time and some have to try and try.

Does that clear it up for you?

tgus,
My bad! I didn't read your post close enough. Now that I've re-read it, I'm beginning to wonder why I even thought that in the first place.

The good news is that all reports from Mi¢ro$oft since the attack was scheduled have been good. No down times (other than to change the site redirection) have been noted.
