I am running Win2K SP2 on a Thinkpad T20. Recently, I have lost the small graphic windows telling me what is happening at boot, logon, logoff, and shutdown.

I see the black/white "windows 2000 is loading" message at the initial boot, along with the full-screen "windows 2000 professional" graphic. But then the "Please wait..." box stating "Windows is starting up..." is gone. All I get is the blue screen with the cursor, and then the "Press cntrl-alt-delete" prompt appears. Once I logon, again the "Please wait..." and "Loading Personal Settings..." box is missing.

I also do not have the "Windows is shutting down..." nor "Closing Network Connections..." boxes. Basically any "Please wait..." box is gone!!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get these to show up again and/or why/how they disappeared? I've scanned through the web and the registry with no luck (so far).

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hey WiseGuy-

I have no idea how the disappered, kinda sounds like some type of virus, unless you were deleting files. Also could be that the files are on a bad sector of your HD, might want to do a scandisk on that PC. If that doens't help you can do a recovery of the system, and that will get your "Please wait..." windows back. Instead of doing the traditonal recovery, choose install and there will be another option to do a recovery off the disk after you choose install. It will delete the system files and then reinstall them. Should take around 20 min.

Hope it helps

Thanks Jason - What I have ended up doing is using ConfigSafe and restored the system files from a week ago. Poof - the "Please wait..." boxes are back.

I can only presume that something changed the registry or something. Thing is, there are a lot of changed keys between then and now and trying to figure out which one did the deed is the tough part. I am going to scan through all the changes and see if I can find it... in my spare time...

Thank goodness for BACKUPs!

If anyone else has ideas, they will be welcome! I would still like to know where/what changed.
