Hi,

I just bought a new PC from Dell and of course they have XP Standard Ed. loaded on there. I wanted to stick with 2000 Server so I did a clean install from my CD - even reformatted the drives for NTFS.

But, when I start up it gives me a dual boot option for XP and 2000 Server. I think I can just edit the boot.ini file to get rid of that, but I just wanted to check with the experts first to see if there was some other problem I might encounter. I don't think XP is still installed anywhere, is it?

Thanks for your help.

If you really did format, that shouldn't have happened. Check boot.ini and see where the two options point to, if they point at the same folder, then you know it's really not there, and delete that line. Even if it is there, I can't forsee any problems caused by this. ________
Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

2k/XP installers have habit of doing this if you use their partitioning tools to clear down the partition. By the time you've done that, the install has already saved a copy of existing boot.ini to memory somewhere - which it then adds to. There should be no other trace of previous o/s - so just edit boot.ini.

Hi,

I actually created the partitions through the setup utility and formatted them (except C of course) later through Windows - so I guess I didn't really format them right away or use fdisk or anything like that.

Wolluf's explanation of the memory copy and appending sounds like what happened to me. So, I just removed the line and everything is fine!

Thanks for your help!
