Hi -

I am attempting to add an IBM X40 laptop running Windows XP Pro to a Windows 2000 Server domain. I have created a computer object in active directory and I've named the laptop appropriately. Every time I attempt to join the laptop to the domain, I receive the following error:

"Logon error: Unknown user name or bad password"

I have searched for a solution for some time now, and I'm approaching wits end. Can anyone offer a suggestion? (I know I'm using valid accounts and passwords, and I know that I'm not making any typos, just because I've tried so many times.)

Thanks in advance,

Don

Have you run the Network Identification Wizard to create a local user account as well as just joining the Laptop to the Domain?

Hi linney -

Thanks for the response. I've run the network identification wizard, but it results in the same error message.

Don, try deleting the laptop account name in active directory (on the DC), then, from the laptop, join the domain. You may be getting some kind of weird conflict between the existing computer object and the laptop with the same name that you are trying to join. I have a bunch of XP Pro PCs on a 2000 domain, and whenever I join a new PC I do it only from the PC side. You have to enter a domain administrator account on the PC at the time, but then all the appropriate objects are created on the domain for you.
