Running IIS 6.x, Win 2003 Server Web Edition . . .

Checked allow anonymous access, un-checked all other authentication checkboxes in the directory security tab, and STILL get 401.1 errors.

Verified anonymous user credentials (they are the same).
Even granted "everyone" full control rights (for testing purposes) to the \inetpub folder tree.

STILL can't get access.

BTW, when "Integrated Windows Authentication" box is checked,(again, for testing purposes) NO credentials appear to satisfy IIS . . .no access.

Any ideas out there?

TIA

check the permissions for the IUSER_GUEST account..this is the account with which all Iterternet users access your web-pages. This Account is created when IIS is installed..!

To get to the Exact account name in your machine rt-click on the web-site in Internet Information Services Console(or MMC)-> Properties->Directory Security->Edit (on the Anonymous Access and Authentication control) -> again Edit on the Anonymous Access section -- you will see the guest account there !!

Tried that:

"promoted" the IIS guest user account to one notch below supreme being (gave temp admin rights); still denied.
Additionally, while logged in locally as Local admin, access is not only DENIED to the web site content folders via Windows Explorer (???), but get the IE "action Cancelled" screen when double clicking on any of the .htm* files . . .

I'm sooooooo confused . . .

Doesn't sound to me like an IIS Authentication issue !!
Why don't you right click on the Windows Folder where you have the HTML/ASP Files and go to the Securties tab..and tell me what u see?

Geoc, any success in this? I have the same problem here...I have throughout the whole directory basic authetication and on one specific asp file 'anonymous access' using the Administration account, but I get no authorization!

cheers,
Alej

Geoc, dont know if it was your case, but in my one I discovered something new: ISAPI filters! there's one applied to my web site, so i guess this is my restriction :-[

cheers,
Alej

Hello.

The problem is simple and it took me sometime to deal with it too:
- Open your iis console
- rt-click on Default web site
- select Properties
- choose Home directory Tab
- FINALLY check Directory browsing option - this will enable browsers to display all files in webroot folder as list.

AND

- in Documents Tab add index.html (by default only index.htm is set) or add any other index extension you desire (index.asp, index.php, index.cfm...)

<hope your problem is solved. :)
