For some reason, when I right click on folders within Explorer the "Sharing & Security" context menu option seems to be gone from my machine. Has anyone seen this before? This is Windows XP with SP2.

i believe you have to go to properties.. and then security and then midway down the page there is the sharing stuff.. im trying to remember but there is a way to turn off some of the wizard driven default settings

Hmmm. I believe I tried that. On other XP machines if I right click on a folder and select "Properties" I see several tabs including "Sharing" and "Security". Now on this machine I only see the "General" tab and as mentioned the context menu entries for "Sharing & Security..." are gone as well. ????

This is the Dll responsible for that Tab.

Perhaps registering the mentioned Dll with Regsvr32 in the Start Run box might work?

Is it a Group Policy thing?

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer - Remove Security Tab.

Do you have "Use simple file sharing enabled" in Folder Options\View? If so uncheck it.

Troubleshooting
"• The Sharing tab is not visible."

What is the view from Safe Mode?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thanks, I've already disabled Simple File Sharing after having found that same KB article at Microsoft. Rebooted. That does not seem to have changed anything.
