I'm running Excel 2003 with all of the latest updates on a machine running XP SP2. Whenever I open Excel using any method (clicking on the shortcut or clicking on a .xls file) I get the error message below four times, each time with a different <filename>.

"'<filename>' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted."

The four <filename>s are:

- c:\program.xls
- files\common.xls
- files\crystal.xls
- Decisions\2.5\bin\crexcel_en.xla

The bottom two appear to be related to the Crystal Reports / Excel integration, which I do have installed. The first two appear to be more generic.

Once I click past the four error messages, Excel appears to run normally, although I haven't tested it beyond opening a file, making a few changes, and saving the file.

I believe that the errors started when we underwent a migration to a new network, but I'm not certain of that. I went to our in-house IT person with this, and she didn't have any ideas.

So far, I've tried repairing my Office installation, unregistering / reregistering Excel, and uninstalling / reinstalling Excel. None of these have had any effect.

Thoughts?

One additional piece of information - I've run searches of my local hard drives for each of the files in question, and came up empty on all of them. I was thinking that it might be a path issue, but it would seem that it's not.

Tools, Options, General uncheck "Ignore other applications"

If you are still having problems, re-register Excel

Check you add-ins. Their path may be wrong. If possible disable them temporarily

Also,

Go to Start, Settings, Folder, Options, File Types. Scroll down to MS Excel
Worksheet. Select "Open" and Edit or "Advanced", Open, Edit, as the case may be.

Command line should look like this:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE" /e

The double quotes need to be there.

"Use DDE" should be checked in the DDE message box it should say [open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel" (no double quotes)

Thanks - disabling the only add-on I had installed did the trick. Now I'll just have to troubleshoot / reinstall the add-on.
