I am attempting to migrate from a POP3 mail server to exchange. In the process of creating all the mailboxes on the exchange server, I ran into a small problem. We have a mailbox on our current mail server called "Service@company.com". When I attempt to create a use or even just a mailbox in AD, I get the following error"

"Windows cannot create the new user object because the pre-windows 2000 logon name service is already in use. Select another name, and then try again."

Any ideas of why I might be getting this error. I filtered all AD object where th pre-2000 logon name was service and it returned 0 results.

If you can offer any advice that would be great.

I have a 2003 server domain and I am running exchange 2000 on a 2k server machine.

Hi Michris2

I've had a similar problem and it turned out to be an alias setup on another user mailbox.

If you send a mail to service@domain.com, does anybody receive it?

Moby, I figured out that "service" is a restricted user name, along with several others.

here is a link for anybody else....

I ende dup createing a user called Corp Service and changeing the email addess to "service@corp.com".

mlchris2 gave you the answer...

you can't use SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE, LOCAL SERVICE, Local System, NETWORK, or LOCAL ( I don;t know as if LOCAL is truly 1....but I do not think NETWORK was released either....would make sense because that account is used only in intial NIC configuration during startup if I remember correctly.
