Does anybody have a clue how to stop XP from continually trashing the startup order of programs. I believe a lot of problems are caused by this "optimization" and would like to STOP it after a clean boot.
All clues will be appreciated.

"When you boot up into Windows, everything in your startup folder loads, too. That's not really a problem unless
you happen to have a lot of programs running at startup - all loading simultaneously and fighting for their piece of CPU time. The result? Your system takes a long time to load. Using this crafty tool, you can designate a specific starting time for each program, thus assuring that everything is loaded quickly and smoothly. The point and click interface makes it easy to use, too.
The more items you have automatically launch at logon, the more you'll love this utility."

There are many ways for a program to load.
Windows XP Professional starts logon scripts, startup programs, and services referenced in these registry subkeys and folder locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

To see if you can disable any unrequired services.

Linney, thanks for the reply. I am using startdelay. My problem is with the .sys files being started. Please see my (today) post in "keyboard dead at logon". Let me know and I'll bring you up to date. I value your inputs, and appreciate your help.
