Hi *,

I've searched Technet, Micro$oft and tek-tips, but so far have found no fix.

For all my users on this workstation (there are 2 of them - Administrator and me), the "My Documents" folder is behaving like a regular folder. I need to fix that and also get the Desktop Shortcut repaired.

Anyone seen this before ?

By default, the "show desktop" icon is located in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

If need to replace it, check the admin's C:\Documents and Settings\administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

What do you mean by behaving like a regular folder?

There is no place like 127.0.0.1

You refer to "Show Desktop". I am referring to "My documents".

Normally, "My Documents" is a picture of something like an open envelope. In my case, it shows up like a regular folder and behaves like a regular, not a "special" folder.

Two steps:

1. Start, Run, CMD

attrib +s c:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents

2. Create within the My Folders document the following file with notepad: desktop.ini

[DeleteOnCopy]
Owner=Your Profile Name
Personalized=5
PersonalizedName=My Documents

Save the file and reboot.

Nope - no good - still a "regular folder". I think the "properties" of the My Documents folder usually points to a registry key.

My Documents (the icon on the desktop) is, in fact, a pointer to a regular folder named My Documents. It can however be pointed at whatever folder you like. It will still be called My Documents on the desktop, but the target can be changed. This is stored in the personal settings. I assume the different users logon separately. In one, target My Documents (using Properties) to one place, and for the other user target to another place. If that is what you actually want.

Could you clarify what you mean when you state My Docs is not a "special folder"? What kind of a special folder are you refering to?

There is no icon on my desktop. I've gone through all 3 Microsoft recommended solutions for fixing this and nothing works. I've been through TweakUI and a plethora of other fixes. I've basically given up and will not work on this any more.

Thanks to everyone.

Hello bjverzal,

Look into the registry and check what is the setting of a value name called "Personal"
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]
"Personal"=???? <-- what value?

As stated, the My Documents is, in fact, a regular folder. there is nothing special about it. The defualt target is C:\documents and settings\username\My documents. This can be retargeted to any folder under the properties dialog. This can be setting for different targets for different users.

If the icon is not on the desktop, in Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, and on the View tab make sure the item "Show My Documents on desktop" is true - i.e. it is checked. This can be done for each user, and if their targets are different My Docs will open to where ever the target was set for.

I have deleted My Documents then manually recreated it, then replaced it as on the desktop and it shows fine with the My Docs icon.

To reiterated though, My Documents is a regular folder, there is nothing special about it, ither than it is created with a defualt target.

Don't give up. You CAN get the proper My Docs set up the way you want it to!

Cheers,

Gerry
