We have 3 Servers running Windows 2000 and 50 users.
domain is domainOLD.com (old company name)

We have a new Windows 2003 R2 we ran DCPROMO to promote it to a domain controller as we want migrate all users and profiles to the this new server with the new domain (new company name) domainNEW.com. We can then shutdown the other old servers and propose new replacements in the new 2003 domain.

In the past we just tranfered data over to the new server(s) and went around to all of the workstations and reconnected them to the new DC and re setup everyone of their profiles individually. Create duplicate users and change login scripts etc.

These is a weekend job and then Monday we are waiting for problems which always happen.

Is there a better way?

Help..

Thanks!!

ADMT on 2000 or 20003 server?

Can you expand on your suggestion?

Thanks.

Thanks for the help guys.

I opted another way and added to the existing domain. Adprep with R2 disk to 31 schema to all DC.

I just got through changing over the Global Catalog server. And I am going to wait it out before I DCPROMO (Demote the old replacement server).

Any tips on a clean removal?

I tried this a year ago and had to do a Meta clean up on the AD as it would not go away after a Demotion.

Any advice would help.

Thanks again.

once you've removed the GC role from the old server, wait for it to no longer be listed in DNS.

Then, if DNS is running on the soon-to-be-decommissioned server, remove that (assuming you've got it running elsewhere).

Make sure any other services have been migrated elsewhere, such as WINS, DHCP, etc.

DCPROMO the box, and wait for those records to disappear out of DNS. Then remove it from the domain.

DHCP - DNS active on the new. No WINS (old school)

I have disabled DNS and DHCP through services, do I need to actually remove them?

DCPROMO went well, AD is gone from adminstraor tools, I cannot tell if its a member server as it still says "domain.com" under network identifcation. I still see it in AD. I will wait it out.

Anything more?

Thanks!

I'm quite anal about it, so i would uninstall just to make sure I didn't miss something. But that's me.
