outputs only &quot;?&quot;. What is that? I have never heard about such escape sequencies in string constants.
 
On my pc it shows '??>' as output, and not
just '?'. The Muppeteer.

No flush, this is compiler problem, strlen(&quot;??>&quot;) is also 1. Only &quot;?\?>&quot; produces the right string &quot;??>&quot;.
Let us write a bug report...
