"domains" and XP Pro.

Is there a simple description of the Windows XP setup process as it relates to "domains"? The computer has a "domain" and the network has a "domain" When setting up users the machine name is the default "domain"? Is it possible to have multiple machines with the same "machine domain"? Can the "machine domain" be changed? Why does Microsoft insist on complicating everything by using the same term for 2 or more entirely different functions/parameters?
Any help please?
