"Copy to" function fails

I have recently set up a domain at a client's site. Most of the users have a local profile already set up. Everyone needs a new profile to log onto the domain, so after profile creation, I'm using the "Copy To" function to copy their old profile's settings, documents, etc to the new profile.

Most of the time this procedure works flawlessly, but on 3 of the computers the process fails with an error stating that Security Rights have not been set on the destination folder. Upon checking the rights on the folder (which is the username folder under Documents and Settings), they appear to be correct. Or at least the rights are identical to the rights on other machines where the "Copy To" function ran without error.

This problem has been talked about several times on this board, but none of the answers seems to answer my issues. I'd appreciate any help on this one. (You know how these things go, the three that did not work were the three most important users.)

Were these in the list that you found on this site?

1. Log into the user PC as the local admin.
2. Right click my computer, select properties.
3. Click the advanced tab, select user profile settings.
4. Select old domain user profile.
5. In the “copy profile to” box select location to copy the
profile to, but NOT into the new domain user profile if created. Just any location will do. BUT DON’T CLICK OK YET!
6. In the “permitted to use area”, click change, select the
location of your new domain, enter object name, select the user who’s profile you are copying to transfer rights to the new domain user. It will prompt you to authenticate.
8. Now you want to login as that user on the new domain to set up the new domain profile locally, and log off.
9. Log back in as the local admin and go to the location of the old user profile that you copied from the above steps. Open that folder, change the view to see hidden files and folders, as well as system files. Select all within that folder, and copy into the new domain users profile and over write everything.
10. Now logout and log back in as the user on the new domain.

This one really has me stumped.

bcastner-- in step 6, I follow your directions, but still get the "Failed to set Security on destination profile. Error: Access Denied" error.

In the rest of the profiles that we have copied over, we could copy the profile directly to the new domain profile. These three are just different, somehow.

Any other ideas?

. Make sure show Hidden Files and Folders is checked, and Hidden Operating System files is unchecked in Folder Options.

. We are going to use this method to take Ownership and change the ACLs on both source and destination profile folders:
On the "Source" profile folder:
Yourmachine\Administrators ~>>Full Control
Yourmachine\Randy Davis ~>>Full Control
Yourmachine\SYSTEM ~>> Full Control

On the "Destination" profile folder:
Yourmachine\Administrators ~>>Full Control
Yourmachine\Owner ~>>Full Control
Yourmachine\SYSTEM ~>> Full Control
Yourmachine\Randy Davis ~>>Full Control

Reboot and test.

bcastner. Thanks for the help

Followed your directions and ended up with a different error message. I do see this as progress...

The error message is in a User Environment dialog box (different from a regular message box). It reads:

Windows cannot copy file <<path and file name>>to location <<path and file name>> Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - Access is denied.

One other thing: You listed the users in the ACL for the Source profile as Administrators Group, the user and the System profile. However, that folder only has the local administrator in the ACL. The local admin profile is the profile I'm using to copy the profiles.

After writing the above paragraph, I added the user to the ACL (but didn't know how to add the system profile).

It has now worked. thanks for your help.

Slightly confused.... Did the above resolve your problem?

If so, happy to help.

Best,
Bill Castner

P.S. SYSTEM is a user object, the same as Randy Davis or Administrator.

Problem has been solved. bcastner--your solution was correct. I just forgot to check the box to include all subcontainers and objects, so I only took ownership of the top-level folder. Once I took ownership of the entire profile, it went smoothly.

Thanks for your help
