"Access Denied" to folders/files; Including Domain Administrator

I am a new administrator on a small network. the domain server is windows 2000. the problem is that there are some folders that i believe got corrupted somehow. some folders and files are not accessable to the owners and even to the administrator accounts. i have tried to change the permissions but again even the administrator does not have access to the folder/files. i tried to take ownership. after taking ownership i still don't have access to the folders/files. what can i do?

Make a BartPE disk, run it on the machine, you will be able to delete the files

Sounds daft - but have you taken ownership and then given the domain admin rights onto the folder / files? If the domain admin doesn't have access rights initially but can take ownership the actual NTFS rights don't automatically change to give the new owner access - it only allows you to make changes to it.
(Take ownership, add domain admin to list and give full control. Push rights to child objects.)

thanks technome, but i don't want to delete the files...these are business files for the business owners. i want to access the files.

adgod, the files are not encrypted.

stevehewitt, it is daft...i have taken ownership and given full control to domain admin. i will recheck the rights on child objects but i recall making the changes on the child objects.

Did you change permissions to the 'Everyone' group? Denial of rights always takes precedence over Granting of rights.
