Quiet sound in videos- how to boost recording volume?

It's quite annoying- when I playback recorded videos from my webcam, I have to crank the volume to sort of hear it. I have the mic input volume maxed out in control panel. Is there any inexpensive hardware / Software / other fix? I just want to be able to easily boost the recording level. Been trying to download video editing sw- either don't work, too clumsy, &/or quite pricey.
