Quicktime won't play AVI files?

Despite the fact that you can make Quicktime 7 open AVI files, and the fact that it works for a friend of mine, I only get a white screen. The afformentioned friend said it would work if I got the DivX plug-in...but it doesn't. Anyone know what the problem is?

If it makes a difference, I'm using Windows XP as an OS, not Mac.
