QuickTime Install Problem

Actually, this is a QuickTime install complaint and an uninstall problem.

I let the newest version of QuickTime install itself while visiting a site and found afterward that it had become esconced on my taskbar along with too many other apps. I opened the program and went to the configuration section figuring I could uncheck whatever had automatically placed it there. No such option. Resenting the intrusion and knowing I'll view .mov files maybe once a year, I uninstalled the program. But when I boot up the icon still appears! How do I get rid of this sucker?

Thanks,

Brody

Do you mean that the quicktime Q symbol appears near the "clock". Edit your WinConfig file / startup programs.

By doing control alt delete I can see that qttask.exe is the program that runs at startup and puts the symbol in the taskbar on beside the date.

qttask.exe isn't listed in any of my config files (I'm running Win 98 SE) but it appears in the Registry in 3 different places. So I guess the question is whether it's safe to delete all those references without screwing up Windows. Or does anyone know if there's one particular reference that makes qttask start up?

Thanks again,

Brody

Try and installing it again, to see if overwrites the registry, and fixes that startup problem. then uninstall it, then reinstall.

Got it! I found the offender in MS Config/Start Up after all and unchecked it. No more problems.

Thanks all for your help.

I have the same problem reported initially - a version of Quicktime was installed from a website with the uninstall options within the Quicktime grayed out, and with the taskbar icon. I had a previous Quicktime already, so ran it's uninstall. This removed the executable, but did not remove the taskbar icon, and I assume registry, etc. but am unsure.

I've looked around a bit, but am no expert. Can someone tell me in some detail how to look at and alter my startup config on Windows ME? I have searched for both "Startup" and "Config" without finding any way to remove the taskbar icon, which continues to appear on each reboot.

Thanks.

I solved the problem by doing:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs

Selecting Quicktime, and at the prompt, choosing
"Uninstall completely" rather than "Uninstall" as I had
prior to my previous posting.
