Hello everyone.

I have searched my topic and couldn't find the exact question. I have winxp pro corp edition build 2600. I just went out and purchased the full WXP Pro w/ SP2 disc and wonder if I should do an upgrade install or should I do an advanced new installation (format)?

My question is do you forsee any problems with upgrading my current xp pro with the new xp pro w/sp2. SP2 should upgrade easily on my old Dell inspiron 4000 700mhz laptop, as it already runs build 2600 w/ (no service packs) fine?

Do you know if this disc is a boot disc as the build 2600 is not?

Thanks in advance ---- sorry for the noob question.

build 2600 was not a final release version.. which is why it was not a bootable disk.

All Windows discs have been bootable since Win98SE.

It is always advisable to do a format to install an OS, as normally there aren't problems when upgrading, that is certainly not always the case.. and the problems can end up being quite severe..

Especially moving from a corporate edition, to a non-corporate edition..

And not saying that you did, but most versions of Corporate Edition (build 2600) are generally pirated.. so it's always best to format to remove anything installed along with it.

What build was the final release version? I'm pretty sure I have build 2600 too...

5.1.2600 is XP GOLD RTM.

Start, Run, CMD, systeminfo on my machine shows:

[tt]
HOST Name: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation
OS Configuration: Standalone Workstation
OS Build Type: Uniprocessor Free

I have never tried a repair reinstallation of XP in order to upgrade Service Pack 2. I think you would be better served if you do not want to do a clean install by using the actual Service Pack. You can obtain the CD containing SP2 widely, (ask your local computer store), or download the "Network" installation Full installation, or order the CD:
It may be that a repair reinstallation would work, I just have never tried that approach or seen its discussion.

One way to go would be to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to save all your settings and files from your old system.

Backup all your valuable data (a good idea anyway).

Reformat and clean install the new XP CD SP2. Then you will know exactly where you stand as to versions of XP etc.
