I keep reading that a quick format doesn't wipe out the data on a hard drive, just the table. If this is true, how can you restore or retrieve the data from a hard drive that has been formated with XPs quick format. All advise is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

ampal - and don't try to use the drive until ready to try recovery (which should be done from an o/s installed on a different drive).

btw - same for full format - that doesn't wipe data from disk either.

If you know what your partition settings were before, it is possible with Linux's fdisk command to set the partitions back up without losing any data. You can run that fdisk from a Linux bootable CD, like KNOPPIX.

Unfortunately, Linux and Windows do not always agree on what partition boundaries should be by default, so it is possible that you will irrevocably modify the drive.

Of course that is possible with all of the utilities of this type.
