Simple couple of questions, I want to set up a VPN from:

Server:

ADSL
Windows 2000 Professional
Dell Server P2
static IP

Client:

P3
Windows Xp
ADSL
dynanmic IP

Questions

1) Is it possible to setup a VPN between the two, how difficult is the setup?
2) What would additaional software/hardware would I need to setup a VPN between the two?
3) If it is possible, what sort of connection speed would achieve?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dan I

You could set up a vpn between these two PCs.

If you always initiate the vpn from the P3 (dynamic IP) end you could get by with a router with an IPSec vpn capabilities and a copy of Sentinel vpn software.

To initiate the tunnel from either end, you'll need a pair if routers with vpn tunnels.

There are a few things to consider when choosing routers, but thats not the subject here.

Your speed depends on the upload speed at each end. Don't expect too much. Even 384 is dismally slow if you're using it for the wrong thing.

OR you can use Win2k/2k3 SERVER which has PPTP/IPSec tunnel server abilities in RRAS. Using the MS VPN protocol built in to all MS client OSes as the tunnel initiator.

ONline win2k/3 docs are sufficient to get you going.

Although Netopia (r series) and others are set and forget.
Yes, a standalone router can be set to "dial" to the remote server when there is traffic bound for that remote subnet based on presence of traffic or in nailed-up mode.

Might have to to ROUTE ADDs on the client if its also on a LAN itself.
