I realize you can do a "brick level" backup to backup/restore individual messages, and you can do the whole store. Now, if we wanted to only backup the entire store, is it still possible to extract a single message from it?

reason I ask is because the store is significantly smaller than a brick level, and we could continue backup everything without buying a bigger tape.

it is NOT an issue if the restore from the IS takes longer

No. Not without restoring to another system. That would be infinitely complicated. Not impossible though.

The store and the bricklevel should be about the same. In most cases the store will be bigger since there are empty pages in the store.

Also, I'd strongly recommend backing up BOTH ways. Getting that one VIP email is a good thing. But in the event of a catastropic problem, you'll need the Store backup to bring the server to last known good.

our IS is about 20gb, the brick comes out at 42gb, growing about 2gb a month. we do a lot of manufacturing so the cad drawings add up, not to mention multiple people get them at a time (hence why brick is so much bigger)

we could also rebuild our entire store from scratch if we had only a brick level backup done, right? i realize it should be much slower

if you've got the money, you can drop the brick level and just do a store level if you purchase aelita recovery manager. This can extract a single email from a Veritas store level backup...
