Hello All,

I need some advice settinig up Exchange 2003 Standard on Windows 2003 Server.

Our network is small of 15 employees.
We have Ms Windows 2000 Server as the PDC.

I wanted to know if Windows 2003 needs to be in the same network when setting up exchange 2003.

We will be using Exchange 2003 as our main mail sever.

I tried adding Windows 2003 Server on my network as an additional Domain Controller so I can install Exchange 2003 and I get the following Error:

"The Opeartion Failed because:

The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare bothe the forest and the domain.

The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer"

Please advise.

Thank you,
M

First off, unless you are running SBS it is not recommended to install Exchange on a DC.

In order to install Exchange in your 2000 (or a 2003) domain you need to first run the Exchange Setup.exe with two switches.

setup.exe /forestprep
setup.exe /domainprep

Exchange 2003 requires AD, so the server MUST be part of your domain.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

Why do I need 2 Switches.
I only have 1 Switch for the whole office and the Server were Exchange will be installed has only 1 network card.

thanx,
M

Hello,

Our Windows 2003 Server is now a Domain Controller.

What are the requirements needed to install Exchange 2003 Server Standard.

Do I need to add SMTP Services before I get to install Exchange and POP3 ..

Please let me know.

thank you,
M
