Not a programming/scripting question, but...

Every time I launch Perl Package Manager it takes about 15 minutes to load while it seems to download every single package from the Activestate Repository. I'm running 5.8.8 build 819, it just sits there and says:

"Downloading Activestate Package Repository (package name) ...not modified"

This never happened with previous versions, but the PPM seems to have changed quite a bit.

jeez, I have no idea why it would do that... :(

Go to edit->preferences->Repositories. Look at your repository and see if it ends with package.xml If it doesn't re-create it with it (Mine was so I had to add /package.xml to the end). I have only seen this if I didn't have an internet connection (or a http_proxy variable if needed) the first time I launched PPM. This is only for the new GUI version of PPM.

GENIUS!

That worked. Thanks,

Thanks for this.

My ppm has also been loading slowly, and this helped me discover why. At least three of the sites I had has repositories did not have package.xml or package.lst indexes, so every package was being downloaded at startup. To solve this I just disabled those repositories until such a time as I actually need them.

I wish activestate would do some kind of secondary check to see if the .xml or .lst exists instead of just assuming if it didn't exist the first time that it must never exists.

There's a GUI PPM [ponder]
/off to check this out

Only in the newer version.. Not sure when it started. They did away with the CLI one I think.
