I'm still trying to get the hang of BO and am confused about Multiple Data Providers. What exactly are they - does it simply mean using multiple universes for a report? If so, how does one bring them together when creating a report? Thanks for any info.
Multiple dataproviders can be any combination of dataproviders that are used to get data into a document:
examples:
1. Using both a spreadsheet and a DP on a universe
2. Use 2 or more DP's that use the same universe
3. Use 1 DP to fetch data from an ORACLE universe and a second one to get data from an AS400 system.
The clue is in 'linking' dataproviders,i.e. using common dimensions to link data together.
To give a bit of an exotic example, I am currently trying to build reports on a relational database (Interbase, Borland) while retrieving other information from a Lotus Notes .nsf database. Both sytems work with the shortname of employee's. By linking the dataproviders I can report on these (totally different) sources as if the data would be coming from one source.
There is a lot to be said about the details on linking and there is an excellent white paper on it. Can't find the link at the moment, but Sri or Steve will jump in I guess.
Starting with a one DP document, you simply add a dataprovider and a wizard will guide you to one of the options.........
