I am thinking about setting up a WSUS server for my office. I am tired of using bandwidth to update when I can just download them all during the night and push them out with a policy.

I am still fairly new (compared to the last 10 years in a Unix world) to the Windows server world and would like to know if it is fairly easy to set up and I guess the biggest question is what is the minimum hard drive space requirement for updates? I mean SP2 for XP is like a 300mb download and SP1 for 2003 is like a 320 mb download. So would I need like 50 gigs of space? Or more like 100? 500?

We have a few 2000 servers but mostly 2003 and all of our desktops are XP pro.

Thanks for the help!

I have been running WSUS since it came out and SUS before that. I download every single update they have available and its using about 18gig of space so far, the sql database is using an additional 700mb of space. It is very easy to setup and get running, read the docs it comes they help you understand the process. i deployed a reg file to all the clients to setup the WSUS settings because i run a mixed network of domain pcs and non-domain novell pcs, they all update from the same WSUS server. Added note, dont forget to exclude the WSUS storage folder for updates, no need to back that up everytime you run a backup. I do also backup the sql database once a week with a transact-sql statement that backs it up live out to a flat file.

Hope this helps,

I would guess no more than a 20GB volume would be enough space to hold SP's and updates for a good 5 years. At which time you may want to replace the server or technology anyway. Besides, the directory which contains the updates can be archived or cheaned out on a regular basis.

I have been running WSUS in my environment for a year. Currently, only 2.86GB of file system space has been consumed.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

The amount of space needed will depend solely on what you choose to download and the number of languages you choose to download. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 7.5GB of space for the catalog.

I hope you find this post helpful.
