Ever since I installed Mac OS X, whenever I open Quark Xpress 4.1, the credits open up and it crashes immediately. Does anyone know what to do to fix this problem?

Hi Raganomics,

Well this is a System Address Error. It usually occurs when an application tries to access memory that is not allocated to it.

What you can do to get rid of this problem is that you could uninstall QuarkXPress and run an Anti-Virus Program on your system to check for any Virus. Once you've completed your Anti-Virus Scan, Reinstall QuarkXPress and make sure that all other Applications including any Anti-Virus Program are disabled.

Hope this helps.

One more thing..... There could be a problem with some font(s) of yours. You can try isoating your fonts and find out which one is faulty and reinstall that particular font.

Hope this helps.

Hi Raganomics,

Type 2 errors are usually related to fonts. for this you need to isolate or diable the fonts. the procedure has been explained below :
To work on quarkxpress 5.0 on OS X, one has to work in classic mode, which means fonts which the quarkxpress is using resides in system folder.

Disable fonts
A damaged font may cause QuarkXPress to unexpectedly quit when you try to open a document or when you try to launch QuarkXPress. If this is the case, disabling the fonts will allow you to open the document. To do this:
Drag the “Fonts” folder out of your “System Folder” and onto the desktop (or disable all open fonts in your font management utility). You may need to Restart the computer in order to disable the fonts.

Rename this folder “Disabled fonts.”

Relaunch QuarkXPress and attempt to open the document.

If the document opens, one of the disabled fonts may be damaged. See the “Test fonts” subsection below.

Test fonts
To test the fonts:
Create a new “Fonts” folder inside your “System Folder.” If you Restarted the computer in the previous step, you will already have a new, empty “Fonts” folder inside your “System Folder.”

Transfer the fonts one at a time from the “Disabled Fonts” folder on the desktop to the “Fonts” folder in the “System Folder.”

After you move each font, relaunch QuarkXPress and open the document.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you isolate a particular problem font that causes the error.

Note: You can speed up the font elimination process by moving fonts from the “Disabled” folder to the “Fonts” folder in groups. For example, you can move all the fonts that start with the letters A through F, and test to see if the error occurs when you relaunch QuarkXPress and attempt to open the document. If the error does occur, then you can narrow down the search to just those fonts that you moved to the “Fonts” folder. If the error doesn’t occur, then those fonts have been eliminated as suspects. Another strategy is to use the Label menu in the Mac OS Finder to assign colors to groups of items to help keep track of which ones have been tested.

Hope this helps

There are a few things which cause Quark to crash with a type 2 error. Fonts are usually mentioned as a cause, but it could also be something else, such as an XTension. Quark's site has a few technotes on the subject: rather than repeating them, here's a link:

Look for "Troubleshooting: System Failures and Unexpected Quits in QuarkXPress (Mac OS)" (the direct link is )

There are other topics in there too, such as OSX issues, that you might find helpful. Try out different things to see what happens: Opening Quark directly vs double-clicking a file, restart in OS 9 and try again, go through your fonts, take Quark out of it's folder and into a new one, etc, etc. I would recommend restarting in OS 9 before troubleshooting. If you can get it to work there, you're well on your way.
