Quark Images

New to QuarkXPress, using v5, and am battling images. I have read some of the helpful hints posted here but still struggling. If i snag an image off the web, even at 72 dpi, it loads into a Quark pub and looks pretty good. My printing company suggested i use 300dpi images. I have tried scanning an image into Photoshop at 72, 300, and even 2600 dpi...adjusted sizes and resolutions...and yet when i load the image into my pub in Quark it looks horrible. I understand the imafge may not look great on screen, but its messed up bad even compared to other images i have downloaded from the web and inserted. I went ahead and printed the doc and all the images i downloaded off the web, sitting at 72dpi, look pretty good. The images i scanned in, even at 2600 dpi, still look all fuzzy. Please help!

1) images displayed onscreen within Quark are in low resolution to speed the display. They should print okay. If the image that you scanned appear significantly worse than the image you 'snagged' from the web, there may be other issues. I am making a guess that you are not familiar with scanning since you tried 2600 dpi. Something in your scanning process seems to be askew. The Quark manual (it's a pdf file on your install CD) will give clear directions on resolution and proper scanning. Try reviewing this and come back here if you have more questions about scanning.

2) My printing company suggested i use 300dpi images. This is not really a suggestion but a rule if you want your printed piece to be worth the cash you shell out to have it printed.

3) I'm a little concerned about 'snagging' images off the web. This is not a problem if you are experimenting but if this is intended for final print, beware of an issue greater than low 72 dpi resolution: copyright infringement.

Yes...the 'snagged' images from the web are for practice purposes, not for final print.
