I am trying to output pdf files from the Quark documents I have been working on. I am using EPS format photos, which display the preview on the screen, and on the pdf file as well. I know Quark 6 has a high-res preview that lets you get around that, but I don't have the luxury of having that software at work. Does anyone know how I can get a high-res pdf version from EPS photos? (Aside from chaning all of the photos to TIFF's?
Thanks!

You seem to be mixing up yourself and others. The hi-res preview only relates to what you see on screen. PDF creation (and the resolution of images within the PDF) is entirely different. Check your print/export settings so that you are sending hi-res image data to the PDF generator. Also make sure that your images are properly linked by checking 'Usage'.

Hmm...I was under the impression that a printer and a pdf export took what was displayed on the screen for their output. I was at a Photoshop convention, and addressed this problem to one of the instructors. He informed me that I would need to get a high res preview option included in Quark 6 or InDesign. He told me that the printer and pdf exports take the images that the screen is set to display, and use them for their output. So yes, you are right about the high res preview being for the screen, but are you SURE about the export process(printer/pdf)? If you are positive about this, where are the settings located that I need to change? I want to print/export a pdf with the high res EPS image (not the 8 bit TIFF preview which is what I am getting).

There are two ways to create a hi res PDF:

1)
File>Export>Document as PDF
Carefully review the Options>Job Options settings found in the save dialog box.

2)
File>Print
Print to a virtual PostScript printer and then take the postscript file to Distiller. Check the settings in the Output and Options tab in Quark's print dialog box. Again, review Distiller's job options carefully so that your images are distilled in high resolution.

He told me that the printer and pdf exports take the images that the screen is set to display, and use them for their output. - - this is incorrect.

The hi-res preview Quark XTension is a silly gimmick that Quark introduced to attempt to catch up to InDesign's native screen display features. DTP artists have always been able to print/export high resolution images. It has been the standard operating procedure for DTP artists to use low resolution/proxy images when they design on screen. Using the full resolution image would have slowed system response. When the program prints or exports, it refers to the full resolution image.

Your output can be the same whether or not you use a high resolution preview onscreen.
