I bought QuickBooks 2009 and installed it, wiping out my Enterprise Version.

The QB 2009 will not open my Enterprise files.

What can I do?

Quickbooks only allows you to convert going forward, not back. If you were going from Pro 2009 to Enterprise 2009, its considered an upgrade, and the company file would be converted and would open. But Enterprise 9.0 to Pro 2009 is considered a downgrade, and will not work, afaik.

You can always try the quickbooks forum on intuit's website:

Thank you.

It never warns you of that before you wipe out the old version.

It has always been that way - you can only convert going forward, not back. QuickBooks EasyStart to QuickBooks Pro to QuickBooks Premiere to QuickBooks Enterprise but not the reverse. Its the same with Sage Simply Accounting and any other accounting program that I've worked with.

Cheers.

I was trying to convert going forward. That's the problem.

You said that your Enterprise version won't open QB 2009. I took that to mean that you were trying to open it in QB 2009 Pro or Premiere. I'm sorry if I misunderstood you.

Cheers.

What VERSION of Quickbooks 2009 did you buy? QuickBooks 2009 comes in EasyStart, Pro, Premiere, and Enterprise. If you bought anything less than Enterprise (I believe it's a subscription only) then you won't be able to open QuickBooks Enterprise data as all the others would be considered downgrades. Going forward a year is not the same as going forward a version.

Cheers.

Yea, looks like you cant go from Enterprise to any version of Pro, Premier, etc. So, it doesn't really matter which type judgehopkins bought; if it's not enterprise, it's not going to open the file (short of the type of conversion referenced in judgehopkins' third post)

I bought QB Pro 2009.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I have found by my other searches that this new version will simply wipe out your old version and you are SOL.

If you go with the defaults, then yes, that is correct. However, you can customize your installation. I work for an accountant's office and we always have at least 3 years of QB on our workstations. Its just a matter of pointing the installs to where different than the default installation point.

Have you tried a system restore on your XP computer to before you installed QB Pro? That should remove QB PRo 2009 and restore your Enterprise version.

Cheers.

Q: Have you tried a system restore on your XP computer to before you installed QB Pro? That should remove QB PRo 2009 and restore your Enterprise version.

A: That was the first thing I tried; didn't work.

You're correct. I just didn't know that I would need the old version. The install information (printed) and the information on the program itself did not tell me that I wouldn't be able to use my old files.
