puzzles about "system service"

Say,I want to rearrange the system services on the Win2k and WinXP. However, I could only find some general ideas on what to do. Have anyone ever done such a task before? Or anyone could recommend some practical articles?

Anyway, let me ask one question first.
Can I disable the "Alter" and "Messenger"? Cuz I am not sure whether some programs,like Norton or SQL Server,would use these services.

It would be very nice of you to share your experience with me. Thanks so much!
