Putting at least 1 detail line on same page as footer...

I'm trying to get my report (CR 8.5) to show at least one detail line on the same page as the group footer.

I don't want to use "KEEP TOGETHER" because I don't want large (more than 2 inches) blank sections at the bottoms of some pages.

My detail line(s) vary from .25 inches to an inch or more.

To complicate matters more, the page footer may vary in height based upon parameters used to run the report.

What I'd like to do is say "if it's the last detail line in the group and there's less than 2 inches of free detail space left, go to the next page".

The "Last detail line in the group" part I think I can manage, but I don't know how to handle the "and there's less than 2 inches..." part.

Any suggestions?

You could copy your detail fields in a GFa section and then suppress the detail section with:

onlastrecord or
{table.groupfield} <> next({table.groupfield})
)

Put your regular footer fields in GFb.
