OK, I registered a domain with GoDaddy software (let's call it asdf.com). I setup Win2k Server w/DNS, named it NS1, and dcpromo'd it as the PDC in asdf.com. I gave it a static IP, and put it as the DMZ in my router. I also made an alias record for the

http://www in

the DNS. In GoDaddy I made an NS1 and NS2 name server and set them both to my exernal IP, and set those servers as the name servers for my domain. It's also been about 2 days since I've done this, so I'm assuming it's all been replicated nicely. So my question is, why can't I ping the domain? Did I miss something? I'm like 99% sure I got everything set correctly. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! Darrell Mozingo

Yea, it's been a good 4months since I've done any server work (been programming ), and like I said, I'm 99% sure I have it all configured right, just wanted to get someone else's take on it... a fresh take on the matter usually helps. I'm pretty sure that site's only if you're having a problem w/their survices, ie they wouldn't help me w/my problem since their part of it is working fine. I'll take a look anway. Thanks! Bear with me Darrell, as I don't know much about GoDaddy...you say you "made" NS1 and NS2 name servers and set their IP addresses to your router's external IP? What do you mean by that? Are these actual servers owned and operated by GoDaddy? Please elaborate. Thanks.

Sorry about the confusion. I've put everything on one box at my location (DNS/IIS/SQL/etc), so that is the only physical server. What I ment to say was that I created a host record for my NS1 server in GoDaddy's system with my external IP. Then I have that host (NS1) set as the name server for my domain.

I can now ping NS1.Massillonlan.com (which is the domain) succesfully. Although trying to ping either massillonlan.com or

http://www.massillonlan.com

(

http://www being

a CNAME record to my NS1 server), you get my server's internal IP (192.168.1.5). So now I'm woundering where to go from here... and even how it's getting the internal IP. BTW, I have the host record for NS1 on my DNS set to the internal IP, but even if I set it to the external IP it still replies to pings w/the internal. Kinda confusing, I know. It's coming back with the internal IP because that's what you have listed in DNS. You need to add these entries:

@ IN A 64.109.1.95
www IN CNAME massillonlan.com

and get rid of your current CNAME entry for WWW.

I thought a CNAME was an alias for another computer? IE it had to point to another comptuer? I didn't know it could point to a domain like that. Darrell Mozingo

don't think of DNS entries as "computers", they're hosts that have a specific IP address. A domain name is just another host...if I were to ping massillonlan.com, wouldn't I get a response?
