Pub 2000 won't open files from earlier version

My Publisher 2000 refuses to open email files sent to me because, it says, they have been produced on an earlier version. I know other people who have had this problem, which is pretty absurd. Can anyone please advise a solution. Many thanks in anticipation. Treb
