Having trouble booting into win98. Doing a step-by-step boot, the last thing I see (loading WIN drivers) is ptvcd. Whether I answer Y or N to load it, the next thing I see is the Setup Wizard.

Hi, my reference shows that file as used by "PCTell" modem. You should be able to uninstall your modem and boot the system, then re-install. It could also be a PCI bus problem, so see that the appropriate files for your motherboard have been installed. See if this helps:
I don't know about you, but I've gotten real familiar with some of the popular search engines to find out this type of stuff. I've come to believe that is some of the best use of the internet. Just type in the name of the file in question...

Hi Carr: If I didn't know better, I would say that I wrote that report - but I didn't. Like him, the modem was not my problem, as I swapped a working HDD that I replace a few months ago, and everything worked as it should.. so it is not hardward, but something on the HDD. Thanks for the ref though. good to know I'm not alone.

Hi Mradmin: as above, it's not the modem - maybe the registry though. I'lll try your advice and try the web nex time. thanks
