I am needing to make a word file read only for specific parts and let the user enter information on some. I found an option under tools->Protect Document. I have not been able to get this to work through automation though. I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

My understanding of that option is to protect the style changes itself, rather than prevent a user to change anything in the document.

I don't think it is possible with word. You have the password protection, that allows a document to open in read-only, or not.

I have never dynamically set the protection for a document but quickly browsing through the Word object model it looks like you should be able to set protection through something like oDoc.RoutingSlip.Protect. Take a look at the sample VB stuff in the Word help file under the document object.

Good luck,

Ralph
