Hello,

I'm writing up a disaster recovery plan for our NetBackup environment. I'm addressing several different scenarios.

I was wondering if there was a way to promote a NetBackup Media server to a Master in the eventuality that the Master server is destroyed. Three years ago a consultant mentioned that this was possible, but I've been unable to find any documentation on how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Mark

You can and it is part of our DR plan. But it is not easy, simple or smooth. First of all we ensure that a copy of the databases are copied over to a media server in a differant building at least once a day. So you have to plan for it not react one the disaster has happend. Also it is a pain putting it back as it was, you lose the record of the backups done in the 'down time'. I got round it by importing all the used tapes. But it caused some mess. You have to do quite a bit of manual work on each client and media server to ensure that they reconise the new master.

Not real sure why you would want to even attempt to promote a media server to master. We have a 20G+ catalog; and can go from out of the box white box machine to fully implemented replacement master server in about two hours. That's what the Catalog Backup is designed for. If you ae running SSO or other options, the "promotion" can get quite involved.
Such as;
What server owns the drives?,
What server has robotic control?
What server owns the media?
Are you using DNS or local host for name resolution?

I'd opt for a rebuild and bprecover any day as opposed to try a promotion. Just my opinion

Well our servers are F15K's and they take a little longer to replace.
