Programs loading On Startup

I'm relativly new to W2k and under task manager there are a pile of processes loading. My question is , what is necessary and how do I control it. I upgraded from W98 and this was a fairly easy process.

no additional software is required!
There 3 possible locations of the pointers - what to run each time during startup:
1. start/programs/startup
2. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
3. win.ini
