Program view zoomed

I am new to this, so forgive me if this is basic. When I move a clip from Source view to Program view, it zooms it by about 50%, but maintains 16:9 (recorded in HD). In order to get it back to size and maintain the margins, I have to do a motion effect to re-size it for every clip. this can't be right. Is there a setting I need to change?

Sounds like you are using Premiere Pro and that your clips are larger than the project frame size.

If you go into Project General Preferences, there is a tick box to size clips to frame size when you put them on the timeline.
